The OMNIMAX Experience
The difference between OMNIMAX and IMAX® is the screen. OMNIMAX films are projected on a giant domed surface with a 180 degree optical system that envelops the viewer. Both are Canadian inventions.
IMAX Film Reel: 2+ hours
IMAX format film is big, so it calls for a big reel. This extra big one, which is referred to as a "platter", is 183 cm in diameter so it can hold enough film for a feature-length movie.
IMAX Film Reels: under 1 hour
IMAX format film is big, so it calls for big reels called "platters". These ones are 120 cm in diameter – truck tire size – and can hold enough film for the average 45-minute IMAX movie.
OMNIMAX Dome Theatre
Perforated aluminum panels in a rigid frame 24 metres in diameter form the dome screen. But in the dark, the theatre screen becomes seamless, offering an unobstructed view from each of the 320 seats.
IMAX Film Frame
The larger the film frame, the better the picture quality. OMNIMAX film is 70 mm – 10 times the size of standard 35 mm film – and travels through the projector horizontally at 100 metres per minute.
This 15,000 watt, water-cooled xenon lamp is the light source used in our OMNIMAX film projector. Its light is so bright that if it were placed on the surface of the Moon, you could clearly see it from Earth.
IMAX Sound System
This six-channel digital sound system produces 13,000 watts of power from 44 speakers in six clusters throughout the theatre. And the eight-speaker subwoofer system delivers sound you can "feel".
IMAX Film Projector
With its 180-degree fisheye lens, the projector is the size and weight of a small car. It rises up by elevator into a concrete housing located slightly behind and above the centre of the dome.
See-Through Projection Booth
The delivery system for the OMNIMAX film experience is an exhibit in itself. You can spot the huge projector at the back, the big reel unit in front and the sound system along the right wall.
