Volcanoes of the Deep Sea brings to the giant screen a new vision of the deep sea and of the ocean planet, challenging us to wonder about the connections between life in Earth’s dark and toxic gardens, life under the sun and the possibilities for life out among the stars. At 12,000 feet below the surface of the ocean fantastic life forms are thriving in astounding density near deep-sea hydrothermal vents - the volcanoes of the deep sea – despite crushing pressure, extreme temperatures, toxic water and total darkness. This surreal environment is the one place on Earth where life lives off the energy of the planet itself and not off the energy of the sun. Narrated by Ed Harris.
Most IMAX Dome presentations, including Volcanoes of the Deep Sea, are approximately 45 minutes long.
Volcanoes of the Deep Sea is produced by The Stephen Low Company and Rutgers University. Major funding for the project is provided by the National Science Foundation.
