The Ontario Science Centre Science School presents students with an opportunity to gain University Preparation science credits during an enriched semester at the Ontario Science Centre. Students acquire a solid academic background in classes that are small and informal with experienced, enthusiastic and imaginative teachers. Science School labs are housed in the heart of the Science Centre.

What is Science School?

The Science School seeks students with a passion for learning and communicating science who have a strong academic background, demonstrated initiative, independent-study skills and the ability to work as part of a team.

At the Science School, there is a strong emphasis on the communication of science. Students gain experience in this area through Science School practicum hours spent participating in engaging activities within the Science Centre and the local community. Students must complete a minimum of 15 practicum hours in addition to their coursework; these hours can be counted towards the 40 Community Service Hours required by the Ministry of Education. Due to these extracurricular commitments, students cannot take more than three courses while at the Science School.

Presented in partnership by the Ontario Science Centre, the Toronto District School Board and the Toronto Catholic District School Board.

What classes are available?

Students complete a minimum of 15 practicum hours in addition to their coursework, which can be counted towards the required 40 Community Service Hours. Due to coursework and this extracurricular commitment, students take no more than three courses while at the Science School.

Students choose three of the following:

• Biology SBI4U
• Chemistry SCH4U
• Physics SPH4U
• Advanced Functions MHF4U (First Semester ONLY)
• Calculus and Vectors MCV4U (Second Semester ONLY)

Please note: Students cannot apply for courses for which they have previously earned a credit.

What else do I need to know?

Fees

No tuition fees are required as the program is generously supported by the Toronto District School Board and Toronto Catholic District School Board.

Students will be registered with one of these two school boards while attending the Science School.

Additional fees for field trips and workshops may be required.

Housing

Students are responsible for arranging their own accommodation. A list of possible housing will be provided to students once they have been selected for the program.

How do I apply?

Selection is based on the student's written application, academic record and recommendations from two teachers, one of whom must be a science or mathematics teacher. Final selection may be completed through an interview process. Up to thirty students from across Ontario are selected for each semester.

Complete application forms for the academic year 2012/2013 must be received no later than April 5, 2012.
