David Smith Jr. - who opened CIRCUS! at the Ontario Science Centre with
a bang - belongs to a family of Human Cannonball artists. His father,
David Smith Sr., broke the distance record set in 1940 by the famous Zacchini
family. Smith Sr. was shot 54.97 m (180 ft., 4 in.) at a performance in
Manville, New Jersey in 1995.
In 1998, David Smith Sr. and Jr. performed in a "Duelling Cannons"
event for the Guinness Book of World Records. Smith Sr. bested his own
earlier record with a shot of 56.64 m (185 ft., 10 in.), while his son
successfully completed a shot of 55.19 m (181 ft., 1 in.).
