Sizing is added to paper to keep ink from bleeding and to give the paper a smoother surface. Internal sizing is mixed into the pulp. A mixture of gelatin and aluminum sulphate (alum) is often used. External sizing is applied to the formed and partially dry paper. Calcium carbonate (lime) and clay are often used to get paper with a glossy surface. More on how paper is made
