It's harder to keep your balance with your eyes closed because what you see provides your brain with clues to help keep you upright. With the visual clues gone, your brain must rely on messages from your muscles and your motion-sensitive inner ear. The more sensitive you are to the receptors in the ear, the better your balance. Balance, of course, also improves with improved fitness - and with practice. |
