Why is the Sky Blue?

It's a good question. Throughout history, people wondered about the colour that we see everywhere in a clear sky.

Here's a simple demonstration you can do to make your own 'mini sky.' It's best if you do this in a dark room.

You'll need:

  • a glass of water
  • milk
  • an eyedropper
  • a flashlight
  1. Put a drop or two of milk in the glass of water. Shine the flashlight so that you're seeing its light through the milky water in the glass. What colour is the light?
  2. Now add 10 more drops of milk to the water. Again shine light through the glass. What colour is the light now?

What's happening?
