Ontario Science Centre welcomes the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario as Honorary Patron for its year-long 50th birthday celebrations

(TORONTO, December 27, 2018) – In 2019, the Ontario Science Centre celebrates 50 years of curiosity, wonder and discovery. For this milestone year, the Science Centre is delighted to welcome the Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, as its Honorary Patron. Over the course of 2019, the Science Centre celebrates its rich history and charts its future through an exciting line-up of exhibitions, films and special programs. The Science Centre officially launches its birthday celebrations with the Lieutenant Governor at a special event on January 24, 2019.

“In 1969, the Province of Ontario had the foresight to pioneer a new type of cultural attraction — an interactive science museum,” said Maurice Bitran, PhD, CEO and Chief Science Officer, Ontario Science Centre. “This year, we are fortunate to celebrate 50 years of welcoming dreamers, thinkers and doers through our doors with the Lieutenant Governor — an active champion of science and science communication — as our Honorary Patron. Together with Her Honour and our visitors, we not only appreciate the Centre’s past, we look to boldly create its future.”

Since opening on September 26, 1969, the Ontario Science Centre has welcomed more than 52 million visitors of all ages. The Science Centre means something different to everyone who has been through its doors, making it an enduring and relevant cultural attraction. Sparked by early experiences at the Centre, some visitors have gone on to change the world — in the classroom, in the newsroom, on the Nobel Prize stage and even aboard the International Space Station.

“The Ontario Science Centre has been encouraging scientific literacy, discovery, and education while creating memories and positive experiences for millions of visitors for 50 years. Talking about science helps us better understand the complex world in which we live,” said the Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario. “As honorary patron during this milestone anniversary, I am delighted to be part of the celebrations and look forward to shining a light on the important role that the Science Centre will play in inspiring and shaping minds during the next 50 years.”

The Science Centre will reveal its 2019 line-up on January 24 and launch a social media campaign for the public to share their magical moments, memorable experiences and photos — from school field trips to family fun to “a-ha” moments.
