Ontario Science Centre highlights 50 years of science milestones in Celebration Way

TORONTO (March 12, 2019) – 1969 marked a year of monumental firsts: humans landed on the Moon, transplanted a temporary artificial heart and programmed two computers to “talk” to each other over a network. It’s also the same year the Ontario Science Centre opened its doors to the public. Science has come a long way since then, and so has the Science Centre. Celebration Way, a new entryway experience to commemorate the Science Centre’s milestone birthday, explores strides in science over the last 50 years across different fields—space, environment, engineering, communications, human biology and the changing face of science—and considers the future in these areas of study.

“For the last 50 years, the Science Centre has helped visitors experience and understand science and technology — as it evolves and changes — in a way that is interactive, enjoyable and relevant,” said Maurice Bitran, PhD, CEO and Chief Science Officer, Ontario Science Centre. “As visitors go through Celebration Way, we invite them to experience the joy of discovery as they see how far we’ve come in 50 years and to be inspired for 5, 10 or 50 years to come.”

Researched, designed and fabricated in-house by the Science Centre’s scientists, designers, writers and craftspeople, Celebration Way comprises six panels that look at 50 years of phenomenal progress in science — from a human footprint on the Moon to the ecological footprint on Earth, from the robot revolution to the Human Genome Project, and from the global village to citizen science. Artifacts, archival photos and interactive components round out the experience.

“Since 1969, the Ontario Science Centre has been attracting people from across Ontario and around the world with its engaging and educational exhibits,” said Michael Tibollo, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport. “Congratulations on this 50-year anniversary and the new Celebration Way exhibit that is sure to impress and educate more visitors as they discover the thrill of science.”

Now open to the public, Celebration Way is part of the exciting lineup of events and exhibitions for the Science Centre’s milestone year and is included with general admission. For more information about this experience and to buy tickets, please visit OntarioScienceCentre.ca.

Celebration Way has been financially assisted by the Ontario Cultural Attractions Fund a program of the Government of Ontario through the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport, administered by the Ontario Cultural Attractions Fund Corporation.
