Are you a Grade 11 student in Ontario looking for a unique experience next year?
Spend a once-in-a-lifetime semester at the Ontario Science Centre Science School!
The Ontario Science Centre Science School offers students a chance to earn their Grade 12 science and math credits and prepare for university in a unique setting. Though they need to be academically strong, students don't need to have the very highest grades to attend this program. They do, however, need a love of science, a desire to learn, and a real interest in interacting with people.
Benefit from an exclusive learning experience, including:
- Exciting learning environment
- Experienced, imaginative teachers
- Hands-on opportunities to explore science, technology and mathematics
- Enthusiastic students who love to learn as much as you do
Presented in partnership by the Ontario Science Centre, the Toronto District School Board and the Toronto Catholic District School Board.
Students choose three of the following S.T.E.M. courses:
- Biology SBI4U
- Chemistry SCH4U
- Physics SPH4U
- Advanced Functions MHF4U (First Semester ONLY)
- Calculus and Vectors MCV4U (Second Semester ONLY)
Students cannot apply for courses for which they have previously earned a credit.
Due to the extracurricular commitments listed below, students must take 3 credits.
Students facilitate interactive science activities with visitors to the Ontario Science Centre and participate in science workshops with (K-12) students from visiting schools.
Students must complete a minimum of 15 practicum hours in addition to their coursework; these hours can be counted towards the required 40 Community Service Hours.
Students participate in a semester-long cross-curricular group project in science communication and engagement.
The semester starts with a two day team building and communication workshop at an overnight camp. Students also participate in a variety of off-site field trips throughout the semester and on-site activities including the following Ontario Science Centre school programs and labs:
- DNA Lab
- Environmental Water Testing
- Challenger Learning Centre Space Mission: Voyage to Mars
- Way to Glow! Bacterial Transformation Lab
- IMAX® Film
No tuition fees are required as the program is generously supported by the Toronto District School Board and Toronto Catholic District School Board. Students will be registered with one of these two school boards while attending the Science School.
Please note: Additional fees for field trips and workshops may be required, but resources are available for students in need of financial support.
Students are responsible for arranging their own accommodation. Upon request, a list of available housing will be provided to students once they have been selected for the program.
The Science School does not screen these accommodations or the people offering them.
Selection is based on the student's written application, academic record and recommendations from two teachers, one of whom must be a science or mathematics teacher. Final selection may be completed through an interview process.
Up to thirty students from across Ontario are selected for each semester.
Application forms for the academic year 2017/18 are now available. Applications are due on April 3, 2017.
